CPR training courses are offered in three levels: “A”, “C”, and “HCP”. All three levels can include first aid training. Automated external defibrillator training is included in every training course as AED play a vital component in aiding individuals with serious cardiac emergencies such as cardiac arrest.
The most popular courses in Alberta are standard, emergency and childcare first aid. Emergency first aid is the most basic of the three and is commonly referred to as “basic” first aid. It takes 8 hours to complete and is required for fitness trainers, security guards, community centre employees and some teachers. Check with your employer to see if you need this course. Standard first aid is the most popular of the three and takes 16 hours to complete. It incorporates all of the topics of emergency first aid including respiratory and circulatory emergencies. The CPR training course introduces trainees to the concept of Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines by the American Heart Association. These guidelines outline the updated techniques and pathways in providing compressions and defibrillation. All training courses are overseen by the workplace approved, so trainees who are able to complete a course are awarded a certificate, valid for three years throughout Canada. Refresher courses are also offered by Calgary First Aid at least twice a week for renewal of expired or near-expiry certificates.

Water-sealed Drainage
Victims of chest injuries may or may not need a chest tube installed to drain air, blood, or fluid from the lung. There are different kinds of water-sealed drainage systems.
- One-bottle – has a single receptacle for the drainage and also serves as a water seal
- Two-bottle – has two bottles connected by another tube, one bottle serves as a water seal, and the other bottle leading from the chest is the drainage bottle
- Three-bottle – one bottle serves as a water seal, one serves as a drainage bottle, and one serves as a suction control bottle (for injuries that require suction pressure to evacuate all the air or fluid)
- The water seal bottle should not have any bubbles, only the fluid fluctuating up and down the tube
- If there is a leak, clamp the tube starting from the portion near the bottle, going up until the leak stops
- If the tube is pulled out of the chest, cover the area with a piece of salinized gauze
