Types of First Aid and CPR Training Courses
Vancouver First Aid offers CPR “only” training courses which are offered in 3 levels: “A”, “C”, and “HCP”. AED training is included in all levels of training. A mandatory component of all CPR classes is training in the use of AED’s. AED trainers are provided in all workplace approved courses to give participants that opportunity to practice using these machines with hands-on training.
Compressions and defibrillation are used when rescuing victims of cardiac arrest so skill development in both CPR and AED is the main training focus in the CPR course. The trainees are also introduced to the Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines of the American Heart Association. Changes in techniques and pathways are the highlight of the 2010 BLS guidelines used in the CPR training courses.
Basic first aid classes are focused on skill development in various first aid skills. One of the most popular topics taught in the basic first aid classes is choking hazards. The trainees are trained in executing choking rescues properly, for adults, children, infants, and pregnant women. The lecture starts with identifying signs that a person is choking; the universal sign for choking is seen below and is emphasized during the basic first aid class, before continuing to a combination of abdominal thrusts and back blows.
Trainees who are able to complete a training course are awarded workplace approved certificates, valid for three years throughout Canada. Renewal of near-expiry certificates are available through refresher courses offered at all training locations multiple times per week.

Medication Administration
Trainees enrolled in a workplace approved first aid training course will learn the legalities and complications involved in medication administration. Medication administration should only be done by professional health care providers such as nurses and doctors. Rescuers should only assist a patient with taking medication if he or she is conscious and specifically asks for your help. They should ensure that the medication has been prescribed to the patient, as well as the dose and route on the bottle.
